Newest
postpartum facilities in the state
February
marked the opening of 42 new private postpartum rooms at Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center. Planned, designed and constructed with thoughtful input
from patients, physicians, nurses and others, the obstetrical facilities
at Beth Israel Deaconess are the newest in Massachusetts. These private
rooms with private showers feature: modern decor; televisions with VCRs;
refrigerators; lockable storage space; sleep-chairs for partners; tack
boards for cards and photographs; colorful wall tapestries; wood-finished
floors; and plenty of counter space. Medical equipment is hidden from
view, yet is easily accessible.

Parent
Connection offers new parents the benefit of experience
Through a unique volunteer program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center, new parents now can share their questions, joys, fears and challenges
with someone who truly will understandanother parent. The only hospital-based
program of its kind in Boston, the Parent Connection matches first-time
parents with experienced mentors who lend valuable support, encouragement
and advice. "The natural support systems that existed in the past
often are not available to parents in today's society," says Christine
Sweeney, L.I.C.S.W., program director. "This program helps create
a connection."

Deaconess-Glover
Hospital
Deaconess-Glover
Hospital committed to women's wellness
Deaconess-Glover Hospital has initiated an extensive
effort to create a Women's Wellness Center that will provide expanded
resources to meet the needs of women of all ages. Suzanne Skolnick, Deaconess-Glover
vice president, says, "Our goal is to offer women the best possible
care in the most comfortable and convenient environment. We are talking
with and learning from a number of organizations and individuals, all
of whom are experts in women's health."
"This
is a collaborative effort," says Skolnick. "Input from community
members, patients and hospital employees is tremendously valuable, and
all have participated in the planning process." Recognizing women
as the best authorities on the practices, processes and educational efforts
that will serve them best, Deaconess-Glover has also held several focus
groups, during which women in the community have voiced their opinions
on a number of health-related topics. "All of the thoughtful ideas
and opinions gathered over the past few months will be incorporated into
the final plans," Skolnick says.

New cancer facility under construction
A groundbreaking ceremony for Deaconess-Waltham Hospital's new, 7,000-square-foot
Outpatient Cancer Center was held last December, and construction is underway.
The $4.5 million facility is scheduled for completion in the fall. Deaconess-Waltham
Hospital President Dana W. Ramish, F.A.C.H.E., says building the new oncology
facility is an important step. "The complete package of a new facility,
the most modern equipment and our talented oncology staff will allow us
to meet the needs of our communities' residents in the future." Located
next to the main hospital, the Center is designed to provide comprehensive
medical and radiation oncology services (such as radiation therapy) in
a friendly environment that is comfortable for cancer patients and their
families. "It will have an atmosphere that is more sensitive to their
needs," says Ramish. Access to first-rate oncology facilities in
Waltham will allow patients from the outlying suburban communities to
receive care close to home. "If you can receive that same service
(oncology care) in your own community, then that's a real plus,"
Ramish says. The Center will also offer a learning library for patients
and their families and a garden named for Mary Eagana Waltham mother
of four who died from leukemia in 1992, and expressed a desire for a special
place where patients and families could seek serenity outside the hospital
setting. A memorial fund has been established in Eagan's name, and a concert
is held annually in Waltham to raise money for the fund.

Mind/Body
Center for Women's Health
Mind/Body Center focuses on women's issues
The Mind/Body Center for Women's Health was founded in 1997 as a division
of the Mind/Body Medical Institute (M/BMI). With a focus on women's issues,
the Center conducts ongoing research, develops clinical programs and trains
health care professionals to integrate mind/body interventions into traditional
medical treatment plans. Mind/body medicine integrates concepts such as
the relaxation response and belief systems with traditional medical interventions
to provide care geared toward optimal physical and emotional health. Alice
D. Domar, Ph.D., director of the Mind/Body Center for Women's Health,
says, "The application of mind/body techniques significantly improves
patients' outcomes in many areas. The interdependence between the mind
and the body is irrefutable."
The
Mind/Body Medical Institute and the Mind/Body Center for Women's Health
offer clinical programs for patients through the Mind/Body Medical Clinic
at the Beth Israel Deaconess Division of Behavioral Medicine. There are
programs for female health issues such as perimenopause/menopause, infertility
and chronic fatigue syndrome/chronic pain, as well as programs for women
and men that focus on issues such as cancer, cardiac wellness, medical
symptom reduction and HIV+/AIDS.
