Challenges to Creating Safe, Disciplined, and Drug-Free Schools and Communities
Guest Speaker William Modzeleski, director of the US Department of Education’s Safe and Drug Free Schools Program
Monday, October 29, 7:00pm, Groton Performing Arts Center
Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital and the Groton Dunstable Alliance for Youth co-sponsor this year’s Rhoads Lecture Series
It has become increasingly clear that today’s youth are continually at risk for engaging in unhealthy behaviors that can impact their lives. Alcohol and other drug use are on the rise, harassment and violence continue to make headlines, and teenage depression and suicide risk are ever present. It is clear these actions are not only seen in “troubled youth,” but in children from all walks of life. They need support, education and information to engage in healthy behavior.

It takes a concerted and integrated effort by all community members to effectively make a difference in the lives of its youth. Mr. Modzeleski will address the importance of community and school-based initiatives in creating healthy lifestyles and the varied challenges to creating safe, disciplined, and drug-free environments. He will discuss the challenges faced in addressing risky behavior and the important role everyone must play in making a positive difference in the future of our children.

Mr. Modzeleski’s experience includes:

  • Serving as the executive director of the National Commission of Drug-Free Schools, established by Congress
  • Serving on the Attorney General’s Task Force on Family Violence, President’s Child Safety Partnership, and the White House’s Conference for a Drug-Free America.
  • He has over 25 years experience in local and federal criminal and juvenile justice areas designing and developing drug and alcohol and violence prevention programs and activities for schools.
  • Representing the Department of Education on several committees including the White House Conference on Youth, Drugs, and Violence.
  • Leading a delegation of health providers to Oklahoma City to assist public schools cope with the psychological effects of the bombing.
