Life Saving Courses

CPR Training
All classes take place in the Dickerson Room at Deaconess-Glover Hospital. Tuition is $30 per class. Reservations are necessary. Call 781-453-5717 for information and reservations

Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Recertification for Health Care Providers
The BLS Health Care Provider Course provides participants with a review of CPR skills for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device and oxygen) and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It is intended for participants who provide heath care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital. For certified or non-certified, licensed or non-licensed health care professionals. To receive a course completion card, participants must pass a written and skills-based exam.

HeartSaver CPR for Infants & Children
Heartsaver CPR teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for children and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of breathing difficulties in children. Heartsaver CPR for Infants and Children also teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for infants (birth to 1 year of age) and children (1 year to 8 years of age). A written/skills exam is required to receive a course completion card.

CPR For Family and Friends (Adult)
The CPR for Family and Friends course teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction. It presents information about the AHA adult Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking in adults. All lay rescuers, such as school children, family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death and other laypersons who want to learn rescue skills for loved ones are encouraged to attend. There is no written/skills exam required.

Blood Drive


American Red Cross Blood Drive
Only a fraction of those who can donate blood actually give. Virtually all of us will need blood at some time in our lives, often unexpectedly. The American Red Cross, in partnership with Deaconess-Glover Hospital, provides the opportunity to give blood to help others in times of need. Blood drives take place in the Dickerson Room at Deaconess-Glover Hospital. Potential donors should call 781-453-3891 for an appointment.

Women and Wellness


Women and Wellness Education
Deaconess-Glover Hospital, the Charles River Family YMCA and HealthFit present, Women and Wellness, an health education and preventive health screening series for women of all ages. All programs are offered free of charge, and take place either at Deaconess-Glover Hospital, 148 Chestnut Street, Needham, the Charles River Family YMCA (863 Great Plain Avenue or 380 Chestnut Street), Needham or HealthFit, 73 Chestnut Street, Needham. Bone Density Screening & Women's Health Exposition
Thursday, April 4, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

A bone density test is a simple, 5-minute diagnostic screening test used to evaluate the probability of low mineral bone density. This test will be offered as part of a larger exposition featuring exhibits and other health screening programs. No appointments are necessary.

Women's Athletic Injuries

Social and cultural barriers have limited women's involvement in sports, leaving them vulnerable to injury when they take up physical activity. Women are more likely than men to incur a variety of injuries due to body structure, bone size, joint strength and other factors. Dr. Lauritzen will explore the types of injuries that commonly affect women athletes, and discuss effective preventive measures.

Women's Self-Defense
Instructor Colleen Parnell of the Needham Martial Arts Center will present a straight forward, hands-on workshop on basic self-defense for women. Programs will take place on the following dates:

Joint Venture
Using the YMCA's pool, this program is focused upon those who suffer from arthritis. This program helps improve flexibility by using buoyancy and water resistance. Programs will take place on the following dates, both Mondays and Wednesdays, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the YMCA Pool Facility, 863 Great Plain Avenue in Needham:

Smoking Cessation: Freedom From Smoking
Deaconess-Glover Hospital offers a six-week, American Lung Association-approved, smoking cessation course emphasizing long-term smoking cessation by using a step-by-step method to change smoking-related behavior. Classes meet from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in Conference Room A at Deaconess-Glover Hospital. Freedom from Smoking is offered as a Wellness Benefit for members of Tufts Health Plans. Blue Cross/Blue Shield members receive a 10% discount. Tuition for all other participants is $75. Reservations are required. Call 781-453-3891.

Fitness: Charles River Walking Club
Co-sponsored by Deaconess-Glover Hospital and the Recreation Departments of Needham, Dedham, Dover, Medfield, Wellesley and Westwood, the Charles River Walking Club is devoted to the promotion of fitness walking and other heart healthy pursuits. The club emphasizes non-competitive exercise as a way to build cardiovascular fitness. Activities are for all ages. Benefits include a bi-monthly newsletter, incentive awards, discounts at area health and fitness centers and retail as well as dining establishments. Special events are scheduled for club members. Wellness: Community Wellness Collaborative
The Community Wellness Collaborative is a Deaconess-Glover Hospital-sponsored organization composed of Needham residents and representatives from Needham-based organizations and agencies. The CWC seeks to build a shared understanding of personal wellness and community wellness, and ensure that everyone who lives or works in Needham has knowledge of, access to and capacity to use community resources to achieve personal wellness. The CWC has developed Healthy Needham 2000, an initiative designed to motivate members to make positive, wellness-inspired lifestyle changes.
